Lesson 3
RECAP OF LESSON #2
The Purpose Of Baptism
Instructor: Anthony S. Walker
Baptism – (verb is baptizo) – means to dip. Baptism is to be undergone by believers witnessing to their identification with the death, burial and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. The phrase ‘baptizing them into the name,’ would indicate that the baptized person was closely bound to, or became the property of, the one into whose Name he was baptized. (Rom. 6:3,4; I Cor.1:13-17; 12:13; Gal. 3:27; Col. 2:12) These verses indicate that baptism is an outward showing of an inward fact.
The Baptism Of John
“John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” Today we are to be baptized in The Name Of Jesus (Acts:19:1-5).
Baptism Into The Name Jesus
1. Water baptism has no power to cleanse us of our sins in and of itself. 2. Before a person is to be baptized they must repent (Acts:2:38, 3:19;17:30; 26:20) 3. Repent – Repentance (Metanoeo- to perceive afterwards (meta, after, implying change, noeo, to perceive) reference here is a turning from sin and a turning to God. (Luke 15: 11-32)
Reasons For Baptism
1. Jesus Himself was baptized setting the example for all believers to follow. (Matt. 3:13-17)
2. Jesus stated that all believers should be baptized. (Matt. 28:19; Mk 16:15;)
3.The followers of Jesus commanded all believers to be baptized. (Acts 2:38; 8:12; 36; 9:18; 10:47;19:5)
4. Water baptism is a symbol of repentance.
Who Should Be Baptized
As the above scriptures indicate only persons who have repented/ been born again are candidates for baptism. The New Testament does not teach infant baptism. |
